A renovation project is causing quite the stir in Springfield, Ohio. According to an article in the Springfield News-Sun, Clark County commissioners  voted 2-1 last week to increase the budget required to renovate the Springview Government Center, allowing nearly $900,000 to be spent on the project.

The article cited that the reasons for the increase are primarily due to upgrades needed for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, however, there are several other budgetary line items that can be considered to offset these costs – investing in furniture asset management, for example, has been shown to cut costs by more than 80%.

While it is typical for costs to rise above forecasted estimates, when it comes to publicly owned buildings cost is a critical factor because taxpayers are the ones that foot the bill. The cost to outright replace existing pieces with new furniture can cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. By opting for on-site remanufacturing, refinishing and reupolstery services, renovation projects like the Springfield Government Center can replace or refinish furniture at the lowest possible cost.

Furthermore, refinished solid wood pieces of furniture will be more durable and require less maintenance than new pieces. New furniture today made of veneers and composites rarely last more than a decade, and many find that it makes its way into future budgets only a few years down the road.
